Research Interests

  • Large-scale text mining: focus on knowledge-rich machine learning methods, automatic generation of training data using rich external knowledge sources (distant supervision), semantic tasks, such as verb sense disambiguation, semantic role labeling, argumentation mining, open information extraction.
  • Computational Linguistics: focus on methods for the large-scale acquisition of lexical knowledge from corpora, on lexical syntax and the syntax-semantics interface, in particular subcategorization of verbs, nouns and adjectives, and Levin-style classification schemes.


Educational Background and Scientific Work

  • 1995 Diplom (M.Sc.) in Computer Science, Stuttgart University. Focus on Software Engineering and Computational Linguistics.
  • 1998 research studies at the Center for the Study of Language and Information (Stanford University, USA), funded by a DAAD-scholarship. Involved in the LinGO English Resource Grammar (ERG) (research on sentential argument alternations of German verbs). 
  • 1999 Ph.D. in Computational Linguistics, Stuttgart University; thesis: Semi-automatic acquisition of a German broad-coverage subcategorization lexicon from newspaper texts. 
  • 1996 - 1999 researcher at IMS, Stuttgart University.
  • Since January 2011: Senior Researcher at UKP-TUDA. January 2011 - February 2014: Funded by a postdoctoral scholarship from the Volkswagen Foundation.
